EPRI-led research focuses on a broad research and development portfolio that can achieve the following important goals:
- Inform developing policy in state, regional, federal and international arenas
Increase end-use efficiency in homes, business and industry
Deploy large-scale renewable energy resources that can cost-effectively meet renewable portfolio requirements
Maintain the existing nuclear power fleet and expand it to include new advanced light-water reactors
Drive coal-fired generation to over 42 percent efficiency by 2030, including any efficiency losses due to C02 capture and storage
Deploy CO2 capture and storage technology at nearly every new coal-fired generation unit placed into service after 2020
Make emerging technologies economically viable – everything from “smart grids” to energy storage to plug-in hybrid electric vehicles
The ultimate goal for EPRI and its members is to equip the world to use electricity efficiently and with minimal environmental impacts, while sustaining the economic productivity and quality of life that depend on electric power.
